Giraffe naming

All 41 Giraffes of Kuzikus are now named

Everybody knows that photoidentification of individual giraffes living in the wild is possible by using characteristic coat or skin patterns. Computer vision techniques are often mentioned to be an appealing and unavoidable help to tackle this apparently simple task in the big-data era.

However, theory to the side, the hard-manual work has to be done in the bush first. Freya Santana Cubas invested one year to study the giraffe population of Kuzikus. She did an amazing job! Among many interesting facts about our giraffe population, at the end a photograph of every giraffe showing its left flank was enough to distinguish them all. From now on a giraffe will never be just another giraffe on Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve. Ask for the giraffe ID map send to your phone before you go for your next hike on Kuzikus

Many thanks to Freya.
